+ | ::I'm not arguing against the "Supergirl joined before Superboy" theory, that's pretty well established (and I even quoted Mark Waid from his Legion Index on my page). + | ::It's neither an homage nor a parody. An homage would be the Alex Ross cover, while a parody would be the Simpsons cover, used for humorous effect. This one is essentially just a recolored version: drop the color from whatever electronic version you have, then recolor it via computer using the same effects and trade dress that the other Showcases have. That would make it essentially no different than the Silver Age Classics or the Millennium Edition versions. If anything, it could be considered a derivation.

+ | :::The actual text in the description is "imitated, homaged, recreated, and parodied," and this definitely falls into the recreated category. I'm also inclined to somewhat disagree as to whether or not this is an homage. True, the Alex Ross cover is the type of thing that everyone thinks of as an homage, but in the broader sense, an homage is simply recognizing and paying respect to someone's previous work or accomplishments. While the primary reason this art was used was probably a marketing decision, I'm sure there was a certain degree of satisfaction in being able to "showcase" Curt Swan's artwork again, and that honoring that original work was in Alex Sinclair's mind when he recolored it.

+ | :::However, I'm less interested in conforming to some arbitrary rule we are imposing on ourselves because of the section header than I am in creating a resource that is of interest to Legion fans. The first thing I did when I actually saw the Showcase reprint on the comic store shelf was to examine the cover and look for exactly how it differed from the original. I did the same thing again when I brought it home and could actually compare it side-by-side with Adv 247 (sadly, not with a copy of my own but an online image.) Surely, there are other Legion enthusiasts that will enjoy comparing the two covers in that way, and for those people who don't happen to own both or don't want to go to the bother of tracking down the images themselves, this gallery currently makes that possible and easy. There may be people who never thought to compare the two, but become interested in doing so because we have presented it that way. There's no motivation to do this with other reprints of Adv 247 because there is no difference in the artwork.

+ | :::Yes, we run the risk of angry mobs storming our individual homes to demand an explanation for why we have not strictly adhered to the homage/parody header. And yes, Reboot, by including this cover in the gallery we are opening the doors for thousands of additional covers to be included. I'm currently compiling a list of all other comics that depict lightning bolts, people pushing buttons, the words Yes/No or the Superman "S" symbol. All kidding aside, its not going to be a major tragedy if we remove it. It's also won't be devastating if we leave it in. I do think it adds some value to have the comparison on that specific page. Similar but different value could also be achieved with a comparison gallery on the pages of the cover images themselves. -- [[User:Craigopher|Gopher]] 04:55, 10 October 2007 (PDT) |

Include non-Legion backup stories?
Most of the Legion appearances leading up Adventure #300 contain one or more backup stories that have nothing to do with the Legion, since the Legion was not the main focus of the magazines in which they appeared. Do we want to include credits, description, images, etc for these stories? Should we include a brief mention of them but skip images and longer descriptions?
- A brief mention in an "Other stories" section if you want, but no infobox or great detail. - Reboot (SoM) talk page 07:53, 10 July 2006 (PDT)
Mystery Legionnaires
In the original printing of Adventure 247, the green skinned, blond haired person was actually caucasian with brown hair, and was recolored green/blonde for later printings. Similarly, other unnamed characters were colored as Legionnaires retroactively in reprints. In the original printing, there were no people who were recognizable as Legionnaires who were introduced later.
See my page at http://lsh.0catch.com/lsh/lshmyst.htm (and feel free to use any panels since I scanned them).

- I'm not arguing against the "Supergirl joined before Superboy" theory, that's pretty well established (and I even quoted Mark Waid from his Legion Index on my page). My only point on that one was that there were no recognizable Legionnaires (viewed in hindsight) there at the time, and any recoloring amounts to a retcon.
- As for how to hook the early page without mentioning green skin, it's generally accepted now that the first appearance was retroactively miscolored, and that Brainy and the others "should" have been there. With all current reprints recolored to show Brainy and others there, that's the "current" true history (think of the Special Edition Star Wars, like them or not, they were more official because they were newer).

- I should have known better, because my first exposure to the story was with the original coloring in Adventure Comics 491. Those little digests were my key to learning about the Legion's early history back then, including the concept of Supergirl before Superboy. On the page I'm building, I'd like to walk through the reasoning with pictures from the flashbacks in Adv 301, 323, etc. Would you mind if I include a comparison of the green/no green images? More cover images?
So that's the right way to build an image gallery! Thanks for the change - I'll be using that code again, I'm sure.
I dug out my issues and was preparing to upload more parody/homage images...although the ones I have (Simpsons, Dark Horse Presents, L.E.G.I.O.N., Overstreet) are all on the other sites linked. Do you guys want those in the Wiki? --Gopher 19:27, 17 July 2006 (PDT)
ShowcaseLSHv1 in homage/parody gallery...
How come? Sure, it's recoloured, but it's the original line Swan/Kaye line art. - Reboot (SoM) talk page 16:36, 9 October 2007 (PDT)

- The actual text in the description is "imitated, homaged, recreated, and parodied," and this definitely falls into the recreated category. I'm also inclined to somewhat disagree as to whether or not this is an homage. True, the Alex Ross cover is the type of thing that everyone thinks of as an homage, but in the broader sense, an homage is simply recognizing and paying respect to someone's previous work or accomplishments. - However, I'm less interested in conforming to some arbitrary rule we are imposing on ourselves because of the section header than I am in creating a resource that is of interest to Legion fans. The first thing I did when I actually saw the Showcase reprint on the comic store shelf was to examine the cover and look for exactly how it differed from the original. - Yes, we run the risk of angry mobs storming our individual homes to demand an explanation for why we have not strictly adhered to the homage/parody header. And yes, Reboot, by including this cover in the gallery we are opening the doors for thousands of additional covers to be included. I'm currently compiling a list of all other comics that depict lightning bolts, people pushing buttons, the words Yes/No or the Superman "S" symbol.
