The Green Lantern Corps is a group of interstellar law enforcement agents acting under the direction of the Guardians of the Universe. The Guardians were one of the first races to evolve following the creation of the universe. The Guardians and their agents have existed for billions of years but have not yet been seen in the 31st century.

This article is not a complete history of the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of the Universe. Rather, it provides context for events in which the Legion or Legionnaires took part, and highlights some of the agents that have interacted with the Legion in the timeline created by the events of Infinite Crisis. In the absence of anything to the contrary, the pre-21st century history as recounted in the Pre-Crisis article is assumed to be the same as that of the Post-Infinite Crisis Multiverse, with some minor exceptions as noted.

A Brief History of Time

Pre-Crisis information on this and the Manhunters is the same.

Developing Technology

The Guardians began to experiment with "green energy" weapons with which they might arm their agents in the fight against evil. One such piece of technology was in the form of an eyeball, called the Emerald Eye. The Eye was a prototype of a will-powered green plasma weapon, devastating as a weapon but not very versatile at using green energy. At least two Eyes were known to exist, and they were placed in an artifact called the Emerald Head of Ekron. At some point the Guardians lost the Eyes, which remained lost for centuries.

Among the devices created after the Eye was the Power Ring, which was fueled by a central "Power Battery" on Oa and worn by each member of the Green Lantern Corps. The Power Rings were dependent on the user's will power.

Crises in the Multiverse

When Krona attempted to learn the origin of the universe millennia in the past, his actions resulted in not only the formation of the multiverse but also the creation of the Monitor and the Anti-Monitor. The Anti-Monitor succeeded in destroying all but five universes, but the Monitor was able to save those five. These events were known as the Crisis on Infinite Earths and offshoots of these battles reached the 30th century. (See main article on Crisis on Infinite Earths.)

Some years later, repercussions of the first Crisis caused another Infinite Crisis, which created a new Multiverse. In the aftermath of this second Crisis, Supergirl was transported through time into the 31st century where she became a Legionnaire for a time.

During the year following the Infinite Crisis, the Emerald Head of Ekron was rediscovered and one of the Eyes pried loose from it. When loose from the Head, the Eye was known as the Emerald Eye of Ekron. One Eye remains loose from the Head, and the other Eye was still attached to the Head when it was apparently destroyed.

A Daxamite named Sodam Yat became a new member of the Green Lantern Corps, part of the fulfillment of a prophecy foretold years before (prior to Hal Jordan's taking guardianship of Sector 2814). He was a critical player in the Sinestro Corps War. Daxam is located in Sector 1760.

30th Century Green Lanterns

The time period between the 21st and 31st centuries is not well documented, and the Green Lantern Corps activities in this time is more or less unknown.
