Baptism by Fire!
(22 pages/117 panels)
Synopsis
Cosmic Boy, Live Wire, and Saturn Girl rescue people trapped by a fire. The Power Grid in the city is down having been sabotaged. Chameleon and Computo aid New Earth President Troy Stewart in restoring the computers that stabilize New Earth, when security cameras catch a gang damaging a Power Junction with an explosive. Ultra Boy and Ferro thwart their getaway, while Live Wire, Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl catch one of them trying to flee, a young girl named Mega.
Mega tells the Legionnaires how she was forced to be a member of the Hand gang.
During a full roster meeting, the Legionnaires elect Cosmic Boy the new leader and Computo the Deputy Leader. To investigate the Hand Gang and their mysterious leader Cosmic Boy assigns a team of Shrinking Violet, Triad, Ultra Boy and team leader Apparition. Mega accompanies them to a hidden Hand base, where they lose telepathic contact with Saturn Girl. They are led to the leader of the gang, former Fatal Five member Mano, who executes Mega, despite the best efforts of Ultra Boy, who is rendered unconscious trying to save her with Ultra-Speed. Mano threatens to kill an unconscious Ultra Boy if the Legionnaires make any motion to stop him.
