The name Brigadoon became well-known due to a stage musical by that name, apparently inspired by ancient German legends of a house, castle or town that is only accessible to the greater world for a brief time and then disappears for many years. See the Germelshausen article in Wikipedia for more information. The same idea is an obvious inspiration for this storyline.
