Synopsis
A group of thieves robs a secret Science Police asteroid of confiscated forbidden weapons. They are confronted by the Workforce, a team of heroes in the employ of Leland McCauley who for reasons of his own wished to protect the asteroid, but, despite the powers of Ultra Boy and former Legionnaire Live Wire, the thieves get away with the weapons due to McCauley's incompetent hands-on leadership of the team.
On Earth, at Legion headquarters, Brainiac 5, briefs the Legion on the details of its next mission, which will be to open a permanent access tunnel to Planet Hell, a prison planet located in the heart of a star. The Legionnaires, wearing goggles to protect themselves from the blinding light of the surrounding star and backpacks that enable them to fly, arrive on Planet Hell through a temporary access tunnel, and soon meet the warden, who had gone mad.
Some of the Legionnaires, including Brainiac 5, go to find the tunnel's power source in order to repair it, and others are given a tour of the prison by the insane man who identifies himself as the warden, who tells them that he is the only remaining non-criminal on the planet. Suddenly, the warden speaks into a hidden communication device and a strange ship enters Planet Hell and shoots a beam of destructive energy into the pit where Brainiac 5 and several others have the prison planet's power supply exposed in order to repair the access tunnel.
While the Legionnaires with the warden fret over the fate of their friends, the warden reminds them that with the destruction of the power supply, the thousands of criminals on Planet Hell will be released from their cells, and the maddened prisoners were likely to turn their rage upon them.
