Earth is an inhabited planet in the Sol System. There are several other inhabited planets in the system. Its lone moon, Luna, is also inhabited.

This entry refers to Earth-1. There is no Legion on Earth-2, and the activities in alternate timelines on alternate Earths are covered elsewhere.

Description

Earth is the primary planet in the Sol System and is one of the founders and strongest members of the United Planets. It was the first planet in the Sol System in which life developed and evolved, and the mother world from which colonization of the system departed. Inhabitants from Earth later colonized worlds in other star systems.

In general, inhabitants of Earth have no special powers or abilities. However, small but significant number of them possess the Metagene which makes them more likely to have powers based on a triggering event. Inhabitants have a humanoid form and are often referred to by those not from Earth as "Terran" (from the Latin word "Terra", meaning "Earth") or "human".

Climate/Geography

Earth has a wide range of both climate and geography. Due to its distance from Sol and the tilt of its axis, it experiences seasons. In northern and southern latitudes the temperatures are colder, and get warmer towards the equator. The planet has seven major continents, though the southernmost continent is sparsely inhabited due to the cold. Each continent has its own mountain ranges, rivers, plains, deserts, and broad swaths of vegetation. Inhabitants of Earth have adapted to every climate (very hot to very cold, rainy to dry) and geographical location (rainforest, desert, plains, large city, underwater, etc.).

System of Government

Over time, inhabitants of Earth formed nation-states with widely varying forms of governments, from democracies to dictatorships to inherited monarchies to religion-based. The nations explored, formed alliances, traded with each other, conquered one another, and battled with each other. From the 20th to 30th centuries, a total of six World Wars were fought.

By the 30th century, the importance of the nation-state had diminished in favor of a worldwide government known as Earthgov. The law enforcement arm of Earthgov is known as the Science Police. Earthgov is a representative democracy[1], a system of government in which electors choose both a body of representatives to govern within prescribed limits, and a President as head of state, all for a limited term of office.
