Tom McCraw and Jeff Moy were the guests on America Online's Legion of
Super-Heroes Chat Hour. Mark Waid put in a cameo appearance until his
girlfriend showed up with food. America Online holds LSH Chat every Tuesday
at 6:00 p.m. EDT in the DC Comics Online Chat area. Previous guest have
included Mark Waid, Tom Peyer, Tom McCraw, Jeff Moy and KC Carlson.
DISCLAIMER - If this is your first chat report, you can rest assured that I
make all this up. DC hasn't even published a comic about the Legion of
Super-Heroes since the incredibly successful "Death of a Lot of Heroes" story
arc that introduced the newest insidious villain to the DC
Universe--"Marketing Concept".
SPOILERS - Admit it--you're not going to bail even when I tell you that I've
put the real spoiler information towards the end. You probably even skip all
the stuff at the beginning, don't you?
The Legion creators are concerned about the $2.25 price tag and the books'
abilities to draw new readers at that price.
Mike McAvennie wants more mail for the letter columns. (Send e-mail LOC
's to dcconl...@aol.com.) The Legion titles get a lot of mail, but it's
largely from the same people. They want new input for the lettercols. They
may be giving away Legion badges as best letter each issue.
Jeff does a lot of full page bleeds. He believes in filling out the page.
Tom isn't coloring "Superman: Man of Tomorrow" and indicates that he has
enough to color as it is.
Jeff doesn't know how the female Legionnaires' earrings are attached.
Andromeda got hers pierced off panel on Daxam.
Mark offered a Flash Trivia Question - What was the name of Barry Allen's
college? (Don't look for an answer, he didn't give one.) He also indicated
that Barry is Presbyterian.
Jeff teased that he wanted to introduce--and do the designs for--a new
character called "Bondage Queen."
A Superboy/Legion of Super-Heroes T-Shirt is being released to go along with
the upcoming crossover. Jeff noted that they needed to make the DC Marketing
types aware of the marketing potential of the Legion.
Tom is a big fan of Shadow Lass. He got attached to her when she was "taking
care of Mon . . . um, him."
Jeff claims not to be good at likenesses.
Tom thought LSH #70 turned out better than he expected. LSH #66 and L* #24
are his favorites so far.
Tom and Jeff hadn't seen Showcase '95 #6 yet, and asked the crowd how it
was. Tom was understandably quick to note that none of the regular Legion
creators worked on either story. The universal panning of the book interested
Tom enough that he considered buying a copy.
Tom and KC have discussed doing another story similar to L* #23--Girl's Night
Out.
The upcoming 20th century crossover won't harm the Legion at all.
Don't hold your breath to see any Green Lanterns in the 30th Century. The GL
people are very strict about the mythos now.
Tom opined that the Bierbaums had made Glorith into a really interesting
character. He further opined that all of the villains of v4 were way overused.
Universo and Mordru are on a "save" list for a reason.
Rond Vidar will be returning. (We've already seen him once.) Rond will not
be a GL.
Jeff had drawn a sketch of a character that he and Tom delighted in not
identifying to the attendees. The character will show up in the Underworld
crossover, and is a supporting character that will be coming into the book.
She's female. The character was wearing a "BD" shirt--whatever that means.
Jeff opined that she was "yummy".
Tom indicated that the readers who think that Zoe will find the Emerald Eye
"might not be right."
Some of Valor's history will be retconned into his reappearance. (Tom
admitted that it was confusing to explain.) His participation with
L.E.G.I.O.N. is a big part of his history. It hasn't yet been determined if
Valor will reside in the 30th century after the Superboy crossover.
The next Legionnaire to join will probably be Sun Boy, Star Boy, or someone
new. Tom noted that they still had to get Live Wire and Ultra Boy in.
