Talk:Legion Publication History/AR issues
So has anyone figured out yet what is supposed to be on this page? It looks like all of the other "AR" books are already on the main pages (Lois uses Jimmy's Elastic Lad serum, statue cameos, etc.). Why not keep using the regular pages for alien races, time bubbles, flight rings, etc., to show how pervasive Legion culture is in the DCU? Omnicom 16:35, 13 September 2006 (PDT)
- I believe the idea is that we will be moving certain issues off the other pages and on to the AR page, but we haven't agreed yet as to which ones those should be. We still have a ways to go before the main chronoogical pages are complete, which I would guess will occupy our attention before we completely resolve the AR question. We could just as easily forget the AR page, although there are certain issues listed, such as X-Men #104, that don't really fit on a page called "Legion Publication History". Even if we do populate the AR page, I'd like to see certain issues listed on both, and certain additional specialty pages that focus individually on reprints, cameos, alternate Legions, etc. Gopher 04:32, 14 September 2006 (PDT)
I want to zap this page
It's not a descriptive title unless you're "in on the joke" - you shouldn't have to click on a page to know what sort of data you'll encounter. You click on a page called Adventure Comics 247, you know from the format you'll find info on a specific comic, Cosmic Boy/Post-Zero Hour, a specific iteration of a character, Legion Publication History/1994-2004, information on Legion-related comics published in that timeframe. "AR issues" is vague and inconsistant - as the mega-poll below shows, no-one quite knows what it means!
So, I'd like to have, instead of this page:
- Legion Publication History/Cameos - one page or less appearances of the Legion or mentions-only of the Legion, not to be included in the main histories unless the Legion's appearance is a cliffhanger followed up on in the next issue.
- Legion Publication History/Reference - Who's Who, SF&O, the TwoMorrows books, fanzines, anything else of the sort which feature Legion bios, essays on the Legion, interviews with Legion creators, etc. SF&O also get included in the main pages since they also have story content, the others I'm far less sure of.
- Legion Publication History/Precursors - Halk Kar's appearance and other "twice told tales", anything else appearing before Adventure #247 (including everything on this page @ LegionWorld) or which has Legion significance not because it features anything Legion-related but because it would later be incorporated into the Legion in some minor fashion (bigger stuff, like the first appearance of Mon-El, would of course still be in the main histories).
- Legion Publication History/Homage and parody - Imperial Guard, issues with homage covers, and any other content which features suspiciously Legion-like-but-not-THE-Legion teams.

- I definitely agree with your thoughts on the AR page. Its not consistent with the other pages, and we cannot assume that all users will know what "AR" means. Breaking out the individual pages would be a good way to go, and I like each of your suggestions for new pages. However, for a couple of the details, I disagree a bit:
- If an issue was published by DC and it contains any story content at all, I would prefer to include it in the main pages as well as on the breakout page. I really like the concept that for the 1950-1964-type pages it will include any issue published by DC during that period. This differs from your proposal primarily with the Cameo issues, but also some of the pre-cursor issues (Mon-El, Dev-Em, Insect Queen, LSV).
- Let's remove the AR page from the top navigation, but not delete the actual page until we have definitely addressed all of the various items addressed in the mega-poll. (Or alternately, save the discussion on this page elsewhere and delete the old AR page once all the issues are moved to new pages
- Some months ago, Michael suggested an Alternate Legions page for Imperial Guard, etc. This isn't exactly the same as your Homage and Parody suggestion, but overlaps quite a bit. An LPH page devoted to parody and homage without Alternate Legions (or vice versa) would be quite short. But I'm torn as to whether all of these should be included on one page. Mike, any opinions?
- There are a couple of issues listed in the LPH becuase they contain house ads mentioning the Legion. Also, a couple of issues are there for letter column content. Where would these go - on the References page?

What should go on this page?
Since there has been a variety of opinion on where AR issues should be listed, and what each person considers AR differs, I think the only way we can really disect the topic is to weigh in each individual AR "type". At the risk of being anal retentive, I have listed as many as I could think of below.
My suggestion is that each of us (from what I can tell there are only four people who have expressed any interest on the topic, but by all means anyone is welcome to join in) "vote" on what should be done in each case by inserting a 3 tilde signature ( ~~~ ) next to the dispositions that you prefer in the sections below. If you believe that a given type of AR should appear in multiple places, such as in the regular history and the AR page and a separate page about that topic, place you vote in all that apply. I have included my votes as an example. As discussion ensues, feel free to change your votes around, and hopefully we will reach concensus sooner or later.
Feel free also to add/modify if I have not covered every type of AR or if you prefer a disposition for that issue that I have not listed. Discussion about a given section can be added beneath it. --Gopher 16:20, 14 September 2006 (PDT)

Don't have time to fill this out right now, but I don't see why the TwoMorrows Legion books are listed here instead of on the main pages. They're books ABOUT the Legion. That's hardly AR. - Reboot (SoM) talk page 13:08, 16 October 2006 (PDT)

- I dont view the TwoMorrows books as any different from the various non-DC magazines with articles about the Legion. They just happen to have 100% Legion content. As of now, everything on the AR pages is published by a company other than DC (with the exception of the Flight Ring Village promotioanl flyer, which I could go either way on). On the other hand, Amazing World of DC Comics is included in the regular LPH pages because it is published by DC and any new information about the characters could be considered canon.
- However, the more we develop the LPH, the more I have been feeling that nothing should be excluded from the regular pages. If it relates to the Legion, it should be included on the page that covers that time period, with no other parameters. The Reprint and AR pages are still useful for someone who wants to see a list of just that material (as are LPH pages devoted to a single series or chronology pages that list all story material within a given era). -- Gopher 04:28, 17 October 2006 (PDT)

Regular appearance
Definition: The character(s) play an active role in at least one story in the issue, contributing to it in a meaningful way, but no regular appearance of the whole Legion or even multiple legionnaires.
Cameo
Definition: The character(s) or items appear in only one or a very few panels, but do not contribute to the story in a meaningful way. Examples would be appearing in the background or showing up at the end of the story when all the action is done.
Appearance as statue, image, etc
Definition: The character(s) do not appear in person, but are represented in some way that another character encounters during the course of the story.
Mentioned in story
Definition: No visual representation of the character(s) occurs in the story, but mention is made of the character(s) by a character in the story.
Non-Story item
Definition: No Legion characters appear in the stories in an issue, but are referred to in the following non-story portions of the comic:
Retroactive
Definition: At the time the story was written, the character was not a part of the Legion mythos, but became so later. This section only refers to appearances before a Legion connection was established. In the case of villains, this also includes stories like Wonder Woman #101, in which much later it was revealed that the Time Trapper was involved, even though that character had not yet been created at the time the story was written.
Parody
Definition: Legion parody, either "in house" or in comics/media from other companies.
Spinoff
Definition: A series or mini-series connected to the Legion's 30th Century universe.
Story set in 30th century but no mention of Legion
Definition: Stories written after the Legion was introduced that take place in their time period, even though no mention of the Legion or typical Legion locations, technology are made.
Alternate Legion
Definition: Stories with characters or teams that strongly resemble the Legion, such as the X-Men's Imperial Guard.
Reprint
Definition: The issue contains no new Legion material, but reprints Legion material of the varieties listed below.
Mega AR
Definition: Includes non-Legion appearances of Legion-related characters that appear frequently elsewhere in the DC universe.
